Properly Optimize On-Page Elements

Search Engine Optimization is a great tool for bloggers to bring more traffic to their websites. The biggest value in SEO is the non branded traffic that search engines can send your way, increasing your “brand” awareness. This tip assume that you have read the SEO Tips For Writers resource on Ball Hyped and will cover how to put your keywords in your post effectively.
Getting Your Keywords on The Page

Once you have selected your keywords, it is important to get them in the write place - Page Title, H1 tag, slug, alt text….boring. We all know that, right? While it is really important to get your keywords in these critical places, I believe that as these important processes have become largely automated, they *can* be devalued.

First, let’s start with the automated part. WordPress is a great example of this and WordPress powers 10% of the sites on the web.

I believe that the value associated with each of these elements (H1, Page Title, and Slug) have become devalued when they all match. What does this mean for the web content producer? It means that each of these should be different. I recommend using only primary keyword(s) for the slug. For the Page Title, you will want to use your primary keyword(s) with a few supplemental modifiers. Then with your H1 (post title) write something crafty that utilizes your keywords.

It is easy to make these SEO elements unique by varying tenses of the keyword and/or making it singular or plural.
A Few Examples

The first example is from one of my sites - a post about an Intense 951 Frame (super cool mountain bike frame). This post is to let my readers know about a sale on the frame.
Details:

* slug: intense-951-dh-frame
* Page Title: Intense 951 Frame - Downhill Bikes
* H1: Killer Sale on Intense 951 DH Frames

(OK, that H1 might not be too crafty, but you get the idea.)

Let’s look at an Example on Ball Hyped, here is a post on how Tim Thomas of the Boston Bruins is awesome. Let’s say we wanted the post to rank for Tim Thomas, we could set up the SEO elements as follows:

* Slug: tim-thomas-saves-bruins
* Page Title: Tim Thomas Saves the Day for the Bruins
* H1: Tim Thomas for MVP. Bruins Win.

Following this method does take a little bit longer, but I believe can have a significant impact on the value of a few on page SEO factors. I recommend varying your H1, Page Title, and slug when possible. Remember, if you update your slug to make sure you are 301'ing your old URL does a 301 redirect to the new URL
