Add Twitter to Your WordPress

In this video, you’ll learn how to automatically add your Twitter entries, or tweets, to a WordPress powered website.

How to Add Twitter to Your WordPress Blog

We are currently experiencing problems with our older videos hosted at Brightcove. Please bear with us as we move them to another server.

In this video, you’ll learn how to automatically add your Twitter entries, or tweets, to a WordPress powered website.

To check out the example site on the video, click here.

Rough Transcript

Hi, this is Dee Barizo. Welcome to another episode of Tubetorial.

In this episode, we’ll look at how to insert your tweets, or Twitter entries, on a WordPress blog. It’s pretty easy to do. You just have to know where to look.

First, log in to Twitter and then click Settings on the top right.

You should see a link at the middle of the page. The anchor text is “(You can also add Twitter to your site here)”. Click it. On the next page, click Other and then Continue.

Now, you have a choice between a flash widget or an HTML one. I’m going with the HTML widget because it looks better on my site
. However, the process is still pretty much the same regardless of the widget you pick.

You can change the number of updates that show up. I’m gonna go with 10 updates. Then, copy the code and go to the section on your WordPress site where you want your tweets to show up.

I’ve created a static home page for my blog and that’s where I’ll put my tweets. So, I’ll just copy and paste. I’m changing the header tag from

to because that tag looks better on my site. Also, I’m adding nofollow to the link pointing to my Twitter account.

Finally, to make sure your page loads even when Twitter is down, move the last two lines of the code to the footer. Those two lines start with this tag

Ways to Empower Twitter Marketing

Are you using Twitter to help build your online network marketing business? If you’re involved in building a business online, you know the potential that the internet can offer. It can help you attract more leads, close sales, build your brand, build your credibility in the industry, and much more. It is important to go where the traffic already is and employ several different methods to market your business; and if you’re not engaging yourself in social networks, then you’re terribly missing out.

So how can you maximize Twitter to benefit both yourself and your followers? Here are 4 easy ways to empower your Twittering for your marketing benefits:
1. Define the Outcomes You Want to Achieve

Do you want more traffic to a website? Do you want to build your image as an expert in the industry? Do you want to show your prospects who the real “you” is? Do you want to simply increase brand awareness? There are truly limitless things that you can accomplish through the use of Twitter; but your tweet activity will be more effective if you focus in on just one (or a few) objectives rather than multiple ones. Once you look at the options before you and have set your Twitter objectives, then stay disciplined with them–meaning that even though you might mix your Tweets up a bit (between personal and business), the majority of your Tweets stay on track with your main objective.
2. Engage in Fascinating Conversation

There are thousands of users on Twitter and it can be hard to stand out from the crowd and get noticed; so it is important to focus on providing your followers with original and useful Tweets. Engage your followers instead of just throwing out mundane details of your life. You will have more people ‘replying’ to you, which will in turn catch the attention of others and provide you with new followers.

Ultimately it’s about adding value to the conversations that are happening on Twitter. You will become someone that people will seek out and want to interact with when you go beyond adding to the noise in the Twittersphere. Provide value, offer solutions; and remember that every Tweet counts and you are building a reputation.
3. Ask Your Followers Questions

This can create very effective Tweets and draw many followers into active conversation with you, creating a viral impact and leading to real relationships with followers.
4. Connect with Twitter Users In Your Niche

“Twitter Surf” and find people in your niche that are following you and see who else they are following and the things they are Twittering about. One follower leads you to another follower and so on. To be known in your niche and build your own profile it is very important that you are interacting with others in that same niche.

Twitter can be a powerful business building tool for your online network marketing business. Stay focused on your objective, provide value, and remain active in the Twittersphere and your social networking will boost positive results.

Follow Me on Twitter

I’ve never been a major Twitter user, but I have long been fascinated with microblogging as a whole and think it is amazing just how popular and useful Twitter has become over the past year.   TV stations are starting to use it to gather feedback, our local sports radio station is sending out live score updates as tweets, etc.  It is truly amazing!
Because I don’t believe I’ve ever mentioned my profile here on WordPress Hacks, I figured now was as good of time as any.  If anyone is interested in following me on Twitter, you can follow me here.

I’m also sure many of you have Twitter accounts and I’d love to keep up with what our readers are doing.   If you’d like me to follow you, leave your profile link in the comments.

Twitter for Business: A Beginner's Guide

We believe the first step in optimizing Twitter for business starts at the very beginning: setting up your account. Joining Twitter is fun and exciting, but take the time to fully complete your account before you start using it. By ensuring everything is well set up, you will ultimately get the best results.

What’s in a Name?

Your Twitter handle is incredibly important. It’s true; you can change it later if you need to. But why not start best-foot-forward and be truly thoughtful when selecting the Twitter handle that will represent you or your business?

Good Twitter Handles:

1) Your full name or a variation of your full name (JamesDean or JDean)
Making your Twitter handle as close to your name as possible will make it easier for people to recognize you at a conference or event. It also treats your name like a brand. every time you tweet, you promote brand awareness for your name.

2) A combination of your name and your company (CompanyJane)
If you will be the only person representing your company on Twitter—and you do not plan to make a company Twitter account—this is a great way to represent you and your company at the same time.

3) A combination of your name and your industry (MarketingJane)
Use this type of handle if you would like people to remember the industry in which you work. This way people will always associate you with your specialty, and it's a good baseline to develop thought leadership.

Bad Twitter Handles:

1) Something completely random (TigerMan)
This is a lost branding opportunity for you and your company and could spark confusion. It's also unprofessional and looks like you're hiding your identity.

2) A name followed by random numbers (Joanne123)
Unless there is a reason for the specific numbers, this type of handle looks juvenile by conjuring the old AOL chat room days. Many people do it because the name they want to use is already taken. However, it gives the appearance that you aren’t putting enough thought into your username to think of something unique.

3) A handle that uses an underscore (PR_Max)
Using an underscore won’t hurt you, but be aware that it generally is never done. Use at risk of seeming unaware of the “social norms.”

28 Best Twitter Tools

Twitter- as we all know is a micro blogging platform to publish short updates (up to 140 characters). It is like an internet messenger. We all enjoy twitting around the WEB, creating social network, sharing updates & knowing what people are doing around us. Here I am talking about some great tools to make twitting easy & effective.

TwitterFox: This is really a must have tool for twitter enthusiasts. This is a Firefox extension that notifies you of your friends' tweets on. Whenever your friends update their tweets, you will get the pop up notification right from your browser, isn’t it great 

There is a reply button and favorite button on right-top corner of the popup. You can reply to any specific twit or can post your new updates right from your pop window. There's no need to visit the Twitter site to do this anymore—it's built right into twitterfox. It will definitely help you increasing your networking & involvement with other twitter users’.

Twitbin: This is again a tool to send and receive messages to all your fellow twitterholics, right from your firefox browser.

TwitterBar: TwitterBar allows you to post to Twitter directly from Firefox's address bar. A small unobtrusive grey icon sits to the right of your address bar; clicking on it will post your tweet, and you can hover your mouse over it to see how many characters you have left.

You can also post by typing "--post" at the end of your tweet. Clicking the grey icon when visiting a webpage will send a tweet with the URL of the webpage you are currently viewing.

Twitzer - Twitter long text: If you want to post more than the 140 character limit at Twitter, install this extension. Now type away as much as you want and before posting just click on "Twitzer text". The extension will automatically save the full text at shortText.com, create a URL and replace the typed text with the summary and URL.

People who follow you can get the full text of the created links on Twitter site itself by clicking on 'De-Twitzer text'.

Twitzer - Twitter more! Also gives you the functionality to post your update of more than 140 characters.

Power Twitter by 30 Boxes: This is again a plugin for Firefox web browser that greatly enhances twitter by offering photo sharing with embedded flickr photos, video sharing with embedded youtube videos, shared tinyurls are unwound so you know where they link to etc.

TwitterCounter: Integrate TwitterCounter.com badges on your blog to display the number of followers you have on Twitter

Tweet This: Adds a Post to Twitter bird icon to the top-right of every post and page, with a nice rollover effect. Shortens URLs in advance through Th8.us, eating up only 16 of 140 characters. Includes the post's title after the link (can be turned off). If your titles are really long, they get cut off near 130 characters with "...". Customize or disable auto-insertion under Settings > Tweet This.

MyTwitter: MyTwitter allows users to display their recent Twitter status updates (tweets) on their Wordpress site and update their status through the Options page includes, customization options including number of recent twitters to display, formatting options, and stylesheets. It can be called as a function or used as a widget.

10 Twitter Hack

10 Twitter application ideas — with or without their API are below.

Be sure to throw some Google AdSense around any of these ideas to get a little monetization out of your project.

  1. digg interface — allow people to vote up their favorite twitters (which sometimes are favorite quotes or breaking news items).

  2. Mash ebay’s API (and ebay username) with twitter username — post new items a twitterer is selling as a twitter by that user.

  3. Techmeme of twitterers — tinyurl.com must be seeing tons of traffic increase, because every twitterer is using tinyurl.com URLs. Techmeme keeps track of what the tech blogosphere is blogging about — do the same for Twitter. Grab all the tinyurl.com URLs, convert them to their actual URLs, and see what websites everyone is truly twittering about.

  4. Timeline for each city — start storing the public timeline xml feed and allowing a user to input a specific city to see what’s been said lately by people that live there.

  5. RSS feeds of keyword specific queries — A Twitter search engine already exists (you could do the same by pulling all twitters from public timeline xml feed), but it should also be an RSS feed, so you can see who’s talking about something you care about (music bands, product, movie, sports team, city, etc).

  6. Twitter Tag Cloud — similar to above; start indexing the public timeline xml feed and see what everyone is talking about — overall, past 24 hours, past 1 hour, etc. User could input a Twitter username and see a specific user; or specific user and their friends; or just the friends of a specific username.

  7. Twitter users specify a blog / MySpace URL — start indexing those and tying people together based on their friends and followers. Input a username and you’ll see “spheres of influence” — or 6 degrees of separation. Maybe display where these people all exist on a map.

  8. My followers live where? I’d love to see a Google Map of all my followers — so if I’m going to San Fran for the weekend, I could hit someone up and say hi! (note: I’ll likely know where my friends are, but this day in age that might not be the case — so display them too).

  9. Categorization: Mash twitters up with some sort of directory of categories with content from those categories, and start an auto-categorization of twitters. Thus, if someone twitters about ’springsteen’ or ‘ratm’ or ‘bloc party’, then those are music-related.

  10. MyBlogLog copycat — a widget that people put in their webpage, which displays recent twitter visitors to their page. Also allows those people to quickly post a twitter about the webpage they just visited. List all twitter comments for that URL in the widget as well.

Use Twitter More Effectively

While I haven’t been a huge proponent of Twitter, I believe that its emergence from a bloggers-only to mass media will help it become more useful in the long-term as a method of quickly communicating to people, versus other methods such as email and chat, which have some drawbacks.

Some people use Twitter in conjunction with their main blog, or use it separately in order to gain more followers, i.e. people who associate your name with your account.  However, there is a large percentage of people who don’t effectively use the service for what it was intended, so here are a few tips on how to effectively manage using Twitter.

Will You Be Using it To Promote Your Blog?

If so, you will want to follow the tasks listed below.

First of all, to better associate your blog with your Twitter account/name, you’ll want to create an account with the address: http://twitter.com/blogname in order to associate your entire brand together.  Much like a regular domain, a Twitter account’s address is also important - you don’t want one that’s too long for others to remember.

Already have a Twitter account for your private/personal life?  Then, it may be necessary to create a separate account just for your blog or business.  Otherwise, it’ll be difficult to separate the messages from one another.

Make the link prominent on your blog.  Once you have developed a small following of RSS readers and daily visitors to your site, you can promote it by placing the link in the sidebar beneath the subscription area or in place of an RSS feed (Twitter can be used to promote your posts, also).

When people “follow” you, they will be given the opportunity to read what you have posted, linked to, or otherwise shared on your page/profile.

Issue updates and link to new posts through Twitter.  This will allow your blog to have “return” visitors who would normally not visit your blog, even if they have subscribed - Twitter can do amazing things in terms of blog promotion.

Branding - Use a logo or image that represents your domain, closely associated in order for readers to have the greatest brand recognition, even after leaving your site.

Will You Be Using it To Promote Your Name/Larger Brand?

Depending on the approach that you want to take, you’ll have to make a different decision at this point.

If you use it in conjunction with your name or larger brand, you’ll want to use one name to associate all your accounts.  This is, of course, similar to how you would create an account using a main domain, but slightly different, as you won’t directly be marketing your blog through Twitter.

Again, associate your one account on all your projects/domains/sites in order to have the most reach.  You want to build a following in order to communicate with the greatest number of people at any one time.

Branding - Use a personal photograph or logo that you associate with your entire brand/company, rather than a single blog.

Additional “General” Tips

  • Don’t ‘follow’ too many people.  Selectively choose those in your niche that you want to follow.  It is similar to choosing blogs that you want to subscribe to, as you won’t be able to “subscribe” to everyone, and not everyone will post as frequently or too frequently that you won’t be able to keep up-to-date.

  • Use other methods of subscribing.  You can use the RSS subscription link in the address bar to subscribe to any RSS feed without actually “following” the person, although this deters from the main purpose of Twitter.

  • Don’t spend too much time on Twitter.  Although Twitter can help you promote your content and brand, it is still necessary to spend a good amount of time creating new content for your blogs.  The main point of Twitter is to spread quick thoughts and notes, in-between chat and email, although not quite so private.

  • Use it for other purposes.  There have been numerous cases of people using Twitter for non-conventional purposes, such as starting a new promotion, running campaigns, and pitching ideas to others.  What other purpose will you use for the service?

  • Discover better writing through less content.  A good writer will be able to vary the length and style of posting.  Practice this through Twitter, which has a 140 character limit.

Conclusion

I realize that there are dozens of other tools available for using the micro-blogging service, but I wanted to introduce you to the service and several of the ways to use the tool more effectively and efficiently when associating it with your brand/domain.

How do you use Twitter/what are your thoughts on the service?
